Course Objectives

Students enrolled in this class will gain an understanding of selected topics related to surgical procedures, including anatomy, physiology, immunology, wound healing, microbiology, and surgical instruments and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on anatomical and physiological systems impacted by surgical procedures, surgical tools and techniques, the mode of action of perioperative pharmacological agents, and wound healing. Students will become familiar with appropriate use and pharmacologic properties of antibiotics, anesthetics, and analgesics. Additionally, students will acquire hands-on skills in the operation of surgical instruments, perform several surgical procedures on anesthetized chickens, and provide postoperative patient care to assess patient recovery from the procedure and long-term prognosis. Students will generate written reports requiring the organization, analysis, and presentation of data collected during surgical procedures and post-operative monitoring. These reports will develop the student’s ability to write clearly and concisely and require mathematical, organizational, and analytical skills. Surgical procedures and post-operative patient care will require students to work as a team and develop their communication abilities. Evaluations will include written and oral examinations that appraise critical thinking skills by asking students to apply lecture material to new and unfamiliar circumstances, assignments that require students to interpret data obtained during laboratory exercises, assessment of the ability to maintain appropriate surgical and postoperative records, a surgical skills test, and a laboratory practical exam.
