Semester Course Offered
Offered every year.
Grading System
A - F (Traditional)
Course Objectives
To provide students with a detailed background in the processes used in natural treatment of wastewater and sludge management. Emphasis will be placed on application of current engineering design principles and practices associated with water quality improvement using natural treatment systems. Specific learning outcomes include: 1. Students will have sufficient understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological processes occurring in natural treatment systems to apply the processes for specific treatment objectives. 2. Students will be able to design facultative lagoons to treat municipal wastewaters to meet specified permit limits. 3. Students will be able to design wetland treatment units to treat municipal wastewaters to meet specified permit limits. 4. Students will be able to design land application systems to treat municipal wastewaters to meet specified permit limits. 5. Students will be able to utilize principles of natural treatment systems to design systems for treatment of other wastewaters and applications such as domestic on-site systems. 6. Students will be familiar with natural systems for sludge management and disposal.
