Course Description

Introduction to contemporary entertainment media from a media studies and media literacy perspective. The historical, economic, social, cultural, legal, and ideological contexts of contemporary entertainment media, with an emphasis on television, film, gaming, and other emergent media.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, students will have learned critical language to interrogate contemporary entertainment media, especially issues of visual media texts and storytelling.
  • By the end of this course, students will have learned about issues of textual form, economic contexts, historical antecedents, and cultural/ideological discourses for understanding contemporary entertainment media.
  • By the end of this course, students will have a theoretical language drawn from the field of media studies and media literacy, which will inform subsequent coursework in the Entertainment and Media Studies Department.
