Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to help students further develop their literary analytical skills and to acquire a historiographic and cultural appreciation of literature in context. The class will be organized so as to allow discussion of the salient cultural, literary and historiographic issues relevant to the particular epoch under consideration.
Topical Outline
The class will concentrate on the postmodernist aspects of contemporary Latino literature in which crossing borders in a literal and metaphoric sense has resulted in new narrative and poetic practices. Postmodern ethnicity in its social context will be explored through some of the following topics: the hybridization of space and culture, collective narration, utopian memories of the homeland, cultural resistance through ritual, and the creation of counter-hegemonic literary practices.
