Course Description

A combination of theory and practice in contemporary art and creative professions. As a studio course, the study of contemporary pop culture and its use of modern devices for creative expression will take place through both lecture and studio activity.

Course Objectives

Students will learn the importance of documentation and representation in contemporary culture. They will become aware of the many contemporary technical devices used for documentation and representation. They will develop a critical perspective on the use of technology and its implied discourse. Students will develop a sensitive approach in their growing relationship to technology and its use in multimedia.


Topical Outline

The class will be divided into two sections. The first section will be a survey of contemporary culture including the developments of the industrial revolution through the nuclear age into the information age. It will cover aspects of scientific theories and formulas and their effects on contemporary culture. It will look at the developments of genetics in our culture and its relationship to Walter Benjamin's article on "The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction." The second half will be rooted in the practice of making art within the contemporary cacophony culture of genetic reproduction.
