Diseases of cattle, small ruminants, and swine will be studied, with emphasis on mechanisms of pathogenesis and approach to diagnosis, treatment, and control of infectious diseases in herd settings.

Course Objectives
1) To understand the mechanisms by which microorganisms cause disease in the context of common diseases of cattle, small ruminants, and swine; to understand how the host response to infection contributes to disease and recovery from disease. 2) Given a herd history of disease, to be able to develop a list of likely differential diagnoses and to develop a plan for diagnosis of the problem. Also, once a diagnosis is made, to be able to develop a plan for treatment and management of an affected herd, and to outline plan for prevention of the problem in other herds. 3) To understand strenghths and weaknesses of diagnostic tests used to identify infectious diseases in large animals.

Lectures 1-4 Mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis in large animal infectious diseases. Lectures 5-7 The immune response to infectious disease; control of infection and pathology due to immune response. Lectures 8-10 Applied infectious disease vaccinology. Lectures 11-12 Diagnostic tests used in the identification of large animal infectious diseases. Strengths and weaknesses of tests. Lectures 13-17 Infectious disease problems in dairy herds. Examples and discussion. Lectures 18-22 Infectious disease problems in cow-calf operations and feedlots. Examples and discussion. Lectures 23-27 Infectious disease problems in swine operations.
