Specific focus will be the biological and economical aspects of the interface of grazing animals with pasture ecology and forage production.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to sit for longer, more extensive exams and complete a research project geared toward the development of a working grazing plan for a specified tract of land given different soil types, weather conditions, forage variety availability, and animal species and requirements.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, a student will understand the basic relationship between the grazing animal and its forage source. Students will be able to identify forage and grazing management techniques that can be utilized for animal production. Students will explain how changes in forage and pasture management can impact carcass quality and the availability of meat/dairy products to human consumers. Students will also deconstruct the linkage between the sustainability of animal production and forage feeding.
