Advanced Instructional Methods for Individuals with High-Incidence Disabilities


Course Description

Focuses on instructional approaches, strategies, and materials for addressing the academic needs of students with disabilities. Students will learn how to use data to make instructional decisions and monitor student growth in the areas of mathematics, science, and social studies.

Course Objectives

The course objectives were carefully developed to align with the standards set forth by the Council for Exceptional Children that are required for program accreditation. CEC has disseminated these standards in What Every Special Educator Must Know: The International Standards for the Preparation and Certification of Special Education Teachers. 1. Report assessment results to individuals with exceptional learning needs, parents, administrators, and other professionals using appropriate communication skills. (CC3: S7) 2. Create and maintain records of student performance information that will inform instructional decisions. (CC3:S2) 3. Use assessment information to make eligibility, program, and placement decisions for individuals with exceptional learning needs, including those from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds. (CC3: S10) 4. Interpret and use assessment data for instructional planning. 5. Evaluate the results of instruction. (CC3: S11) 6. Implement the least intensive intervention consistent with the needs of individuals with exceptionalities. (CC6: S2) 7. Recognize educational implications of characteristics of various exceptionalities. (CC2: K3) 8. Develop and/or select instructional content, materials, resources, and strategies that respond to cultural, linguistic, gender differences.(CC4:S1) 9. Understand the relationship between listening skills and subsequent development of critical thinking, reading comprehension, and oral and written language (GC4: K2) 10. Select, adapt, and use instructional strategies and materials according to characteristics and performance information of the learner. (CC4: S7) 11. Discuss the relationship between reading instruction and the identification and treatment of various disabilities (GC4: K5) 12. Describe how language development impacts academic and social skills of individuals with disabilities (GC4: K3) 13. Evaluate, select, develop, and adopt curricula materials and technology appropriate for individuals with disabilities. (GC4: S5) 14. Use instructional techniques and strategies that promote successful transitions for individuals with exceptional learning needs. (CC4: S13) 15. Use appropriate reading methods for individuals who have learning disabilities. (LD4: S5) 16. Use appropriate math methods and instructional strategies, including articulation, practice, immediate feedback, and review.(LD4: S10) 17. Identify and use research-supported instructional strategies and practice for teaching individuals with disabilities. (LD4: S11) 18. Use appropriate instructional strategies to teach math skills and concepts while considering the characteristics of the learner and error patterns. (GC4: S11) 19. Incorporate evaluation, planning, and management procedures that match learner needs with the instructional environment. 20. Identify best practices (i.e., research validated practices) regarding a range of instructional practices and classroom management procedures. 21. Identify realistic expectations for personal and social behavior in various settings. (CC6: S4) 22. Modify speed of presentation and use organization cues. (LD4: S12) 23. Integrate appropriate teaching strategies and instructional approaches to provide effective instruction in academic and nonacademic areas for individuals with disabilities. (LD4: S13) 24. Identify supports needed for successful integration into various program placements. (CC3: S12) 25. Discuss the major demands of various learning environments, such as individualized instruction in general education classes. (CC4: K2) 26.
