Course Description
Emphasis is on conversational skills with attention to reading,
writing, and listening comprehension. Fundamentals of Italian
pronunciation and grammar and study of Italian culture. Work in
the language laboratory.

- Functions: talking about the past, present, and future; influencing others; agreeing and disagreeing; describing and explaining; expressing courtesy and respect; expressing emotional involvement; giving commands; expressing wishes; making requests and recommendations; advising; talking about what you would do/should have done; ordering and making polite requests.
- Topics and vocabulary: parts of the body, physical health, places, stores, geographical features; professions; social life; advice; money; travel; restaurants; hotels; relationships; pastimes.
- Grammar: future, present perfect vs. imperfect; commands; conditional; subjunctive; comparatives and superlatives.
- Pronunciation: attention will be given to vowels, consonants, stress, and intonation throughout the course.
- Culture: cultural material on customs, geography, history, literature, art and politics of Italy.
