Agribusiness Law


Course Description

Students will survey legal principles applying to agribusiness firms, legal basics, and how to access legal materials. Students will learn how to discern rights and obligations regarding contracts, business instruments, torts, property, and nuisance. The materials should enable students to recognize and avoid legal problems and effectively use legal counsel.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will write a detailed report that demonstrates their creative independence with a level of complexity and specialization beyond the expectations for the undergraduate students. This report will systematically analyze and explore an advanced topic related to the course content (minimum of 10 pages and 5 scholarly references). The format and references should be in the format used by the Journal of Agribusiness. Each student will also prepare and present a comprehensive presentation to the class that demonstrates their advanced knowledge of a selected topic (45 minutes). The final exam will require graduate students to answer additional essay questions and demonstrate an advanced understanding of the course content by analyzing and synthesizing information.

Through an understanding of common law, case law, statutes and regulations, students will learn how to discern rights and obligations regarding contracts, torts, property, and natural resources. The materials should enable students to recognize and avoid legal problems and effectively use legal counsel.
