Course Description
Through community-based language teaching experience, research, reflection, and classroom instruction, students learn relevant methods and materials for teaching a second language.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete additional
empirical or library research that is specific to their
interests. Examples of such research might include: a
literature review of current research on family literacy, or a
series of interviews with families in the community and/or
local school personnel.

Course Objectives
Students will: 1) learn about current methods and materials for teaching second language learners in community-based programs and become knowledgeable about issues critical to community-based language teaching 2) teach second language learners in a local community-based program 3) research and study issues important to second language teaching while being immersed in a teaching and service learning experience 4) become a linguistically, culturally, and pedagogically informed citizen and community member and move back and forth from contemplation and scholarship to community action
