Course Objectives
During the fall semester students will work to achieve the following practicum class course objectives: * communicate effectively by organizing information clearly in spoken and written form * develop self-awareness in terms of knowledge of own strengths and weaknesses, reactions to authority, conflict, and stress * demonstrate awareness of and control of prejudices, biases, and stereotypes when working with people * demonstrate ability to recognized and relate to individual differences in interactions with clients * develop an awareness of oppression, diversity and issues of social and economic injustice * analyze resources, strengths, and constraints of a client system * identify strengths, capabilities, and anticipated outcomes

Week 1 Topic: Orientation to Course Review of syllabus, course content and process; preparing for field education. Week 2 Topic: Establishing Workable Field Learning Objectives Read: BSW Field Manual. Discussion of service learning plans, ethics, and manual. Identifying professional skill development. Week 3 Topic: Developing Self-Awareness for Professional use Group discussion of social worker roles, integration of personal and professional self, Processing personal responses and reactions to clients and agencies. Due: Service Learning Plan Week 4 Topic: Establishing Effective Communication for Interviewing Review of interviewing principles and techniques. Preparing for client assessment. Read: handouts.
