Seminar Autism Spectrum Disorders


Course Description

Explores topics related to family life, legal issues, community concerns, health, and public school issues. Guest presenters will focus on current issues and problems in their areas of expertise. Discussions and class activities will expand the learner's understanding of what it's like to raise and educate a child with ASD.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to: 1. Design a method of daily/weekly communication with a parent. 2. Design "parent teaching instructions" for classroom participation. 3. Participate in a role play involving a parent and teacher in conflict over an IEP issue. 4. Identify educational legal decisions on behalf of children with autism. 5. Given psychological report information, complete an ASD eligibility form. 6. Design a "handout" enumerating community services for families affected by autism. 7. Locate and copy uses and side effects for specific drugs used to treat associated symptoms of autism. 8. Identify and describe medical conditions often associated with autism.
