Course Description

Geographic principles and the history of geography in the school curriculum; the literature of the field, including textbooks; the application of special techniques; and geographic evaluation.

  • Students will expand and demonstrate knowledge of content and modes of inquiry that are essential to the study of geography.
  • Students will engage with ideas and information about human and spatial geography needed to teach in social studies classrooms.
  • Students will practice using geographic skills to prepare lessons for teaching geography in social studies classrooms.
  • Students will interpret and create a geography curriculum that reflects state, local, and national content standards.
  • Students will develop knowledge of instructional materials and methods that reflect creative use of geographic knowledge and skill for teaching geography in elementary, middle, and high school settings.
  • Students will use knowledge of social, linguistic, and cultural diversity to create an equitable and culturally responsive classroom.
  • Students will develop an understanding of and learn to design types of assessments based on knowledge of their characteristics, uses, and limitations to promote student growth and match instructional goals.
  • Students will articulate clear and defensible rationales for curricular and instructional decision-making.
  • Students will learn to vary their instructional roles (i.e., instructor, facilitator, audience), instructional strategies, and materials to support active student engagement in worthwhile learning for all students.
  • Students will engage in collaborative inquiry around major issues related to teaching geography.
