Environmental and Public Health Law


Course Description

Basic legal principles and procedures as they relate to environmental regulations and public health. Coverage of common law, torts, nuisances, regulatory standards, and state and federal environmental laws. Delineation of significant constitutional and federal regulations that affect managerial decisions.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be expected to complete all of the assignments required of undergraduate students except that the Web Problem Set will be replaced by a comprehensive term paper. The topic shall be extensively researched and developed into a written paper in a format suitable for publication in a journal.

Course Objectives

This course will provide an introduction of legal principles, procedures and terminology for students in environmental health science and other environmental sciences. Substantive materials on common law, torts, nuisances, and regulatory standards and authorities will give them a legal foundation to assist them in avoiding legal problems. Delineation of significant constitutional and federal regulations that affect managerial decisions will assist them in being better managers to preclude environmental degradation. The background information will provide a foundation to help them determine when and how to secure effective counsel.
