Course Description
Chamber orchestra for strings. Preparation and performance of chamber music from the Baroque period to the present.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will: (1) serve in leadership positions and be
responsible for preparing music for rehearsal and performance
(i.e., marking bowings and articulations, etc.); (2) make
presentations to the group on the history and performance
practice of all works performed.

Non-Traditional Format
Two group rehearsals in typical performing ensemble format for a total of six hours per week, culminating in one or two public performances per semester.

Course Objectives
The successful student will demonstrate: 1. Knowledge of performance practice appropriate for each work studied; 2. Accurate and musical performance of each work performed; 3. Knowledge of the wide variety of musical styles contained in the chamber orchestra repertoire; and 4. Knowledge of the basic approach to the successful performance of chamber music.
Topical Outline
1. General characteristics of chamber music in each historical style period from the Baroque to the present. 2. Performance practices of each historical style period from the Baroque to the present; 3. General compositional characteristics of the composers whose works are studied and performed; and 4. Technical and musical requirements of each work studied and performed.
