Public Health and the Health Professions


Course Description

Relationship between the public's health and the health professions, including the role of the health care professional in local, state, and national public health systems, the Healthy People 2010 program, interdisciplinary public health professional teams, and the health care professional's role in prevention programs.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Complete a research study based on literature search on a public health topic determined in consult with the course coordinator. Results will be presented to the class and as a final paper.

Course Objectives

1. Describe the role of Public Health in the United States. 2. Discuss the development and goals of the Healthy People 2010 program. 3. Discuss the importance of eliminating health disparities to the nation's health. 4. Describe the role of the health care professional in disease prevention. 5. Develop an action plan for the health care professional's role in public health.
