Course Objectives

The course sequence will develop all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) at the elementary level in a Scandinavian language. Students will also acquire a basic knowledge of the target culture, including geography, history, politics, the arts, popular culture, and everyday life. These courses are designed for students of German who would like to gain some knowledge of a closely related language/culture, as well as for any other students who would like to acquire a basic proficiency in the given language for some particular purpose.


Topical Outline

The course will follow an appropriate beginning textbook chosen by the instructor, in consultation with the German Language Coordinator of the Dept. of Germanic and Slavic Languages. Following is a typical sequence of topics for SCAN 1002: I. Finding a place to live II. Traveling III. Visiting the doctor and the dentist IV. Entertainment V. Seasons and holidays VI. Education
