Course Description

A continuation of the material of Music Theory I through more complex diatonic part-writing and analysis through beginning chromatic harmony and analysis. Keyboard harmony work is included.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to write harmonization of given melodies using chords in all inversions and secondary dominant functions chords.
  • Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to realize figured bass symbols in simple harmonic style.
  • Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to compose a short, mainly diatonic work in small form for piano or piano and instrument.
  • Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to analyze simple musical excerpts using roman numerals and appropriate non-harmonic tone designation, drawing on all prior musical instruction.

  • * Diatonic part-writing and analysis.
  • * Introduction to chromatic harmony and analysis (secondary dominant functions).
  • * Small form composition for piano and/or piano and instrument using diatonic and simple chromatic harmonic language.
