Speech-Language Pathology Practicum II


Course Description

Second semester of supervised clinical practice with clients of various ages and cultural/linguistic backgrounds. Skill development in screening, prevention, evaluation, and intervention for various types and severities of communication disorders/differences and swallowing disorders. Development of interpersonal qualities. Professional issues and case studies presented in weekly seminars.

Clinical practicum. Hours in discussion, preparation, and clinical delivery vary but are never fewer than credit hours.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Integrate and apply knowledge of academic content, research, and evidence-based clinical practice to clinical procedures used with culturally diverse clients across the life span. 2. Demonstrate clinical competency in principles and methods of prevention, evaluation, and intervention required for entry- level practice for clients with communication and swallowing disorders. 3. Apply knowledge of ethical conduct standards to clinical practice. 4. Discuss knowledge of contemporary professional issues affecting the profession of speech-language pathology. 5. Compare and contrast knowledge of state and federal regulations related to the practice of speech-language pathology and credentials for professional practice. 6. Complete supervised clock hour requirements for clinical practicum as partial fulfillment of the standards for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology.

1. Performance in clinical practicum for development of competency in prevention, evaluation, and intervention of communication and swallowing disorders 2. Participation in weekly seminar with topics to include: a. Clinic procedures b. Case management techniques c. Case presentations d. Professional issues related to the practice of speech- language pathology e. Ethics in speech-language pathology f. State and federal regulations for professional practice, including the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Medicare, Medicaid, HIPAA, and state licensure laws
