Exercise Physiology Laboratory


Course Description

Laboratory experiences in exercise physiology, including use of common measurement tools in exercise physiology. Major principles in exercise physiology.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to write a lab report for each lab session. The reports will be in scientific journal style and will be graded (consisting of 20% of total grade). These reports will summarize each lab experience and include data collected.

Course Objectives

1. Prepare a publication quality figures of data using Microsoft Excel. 2. Collect standard subject data and testing condition data 3. Demonstrate ability to use standard laboratory ergometers (cycle and treadmill). 4. Measure muscle force development and perform tests of motor control. 5. Demonstrate how muscle emg and muscle fatigue can be measured. 6. Explain basic principles behind motor control. 7. Explain how muscle soreness and injury result from exercise and the time course of muscle soreness. 8. Demonstrate how anaerobic power can be measured using the Wingate test. 9. Use open-circuit spirometry and the Douglas bag method to measure aerobic energy expenditure. 10. Explain the key elements to the measurement of maximal oxygen uptake. 11. Explain how tests that estimate maximal oxygen uptake are performed. 12. Describe how exercise and stress alter blood pressure. 13. Discuss how exercise alters respiration and the impact of breathing restrictions on exercise performance. 14. Discuss how increased room temperature alters exercise capacity. 15. Gain practical experience with three methods of estimating of Body composition. 16. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the different methods of measuring body composition. 17. Descrive how to measure limb volume and how exercise might alter limb volume.
