Analytical Thinking

Course Description

Principles, methods, and techniques used in the identification and sampling of freshwater and marine fisheries. Emphasis is on hands-on experience in both field and laboratory settings.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are assigned as group leaders and are responsible for organizing groups and leading these groups in field and laboratory exercises.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will learn how to survey major methods of fisheries research and management involving people, aquatic habitats, and fish populations.
  • Students will learn basic identification, life history, and environmental requirements of major commercial and sport fishes.

  • Electrofishing - Broad River (backpack shocker) - Waders required
  • FISH LAB #2 – Centrarchidae of North America
  • Clarks Hill Gill Netting – Reservoir Fisheries
  • Overnight trip to Altamaha River - (Trawling on the Anna)
  • Seining and safe handling of large fish: Population estimate of Catfish
  • Pond - Wet-wading recommended
  • FISH LAB # 3 – The Salmanidae of North America
  • FISH LAB # 4 – The Ictaluridae of North America
  • Overnight trip to Brunswick – Gill Netting
  • FISH LAB # 5 - Gear Maintenance – Engines, Trailers, Gear, (net construction)
