Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to: * perform select choral, dance, and instrumental Africa music from traditional repertoire to contemporary styles as practiced by specific indigenous ethnic groups of national and urban civilizations, as well as repertoire promoted by the African music academic canon.
Topical Outline
Topics of study include: 1. introduction to conceptual framework of music 2. overview of repertoire 3. choral and/or instrumental repertoire selections from such genres embedded in: * functional and ritual organizations * religious music and nationalist styles * makwaya * dance * African popular music
