Asian Music Ensemble


Course Description

An ensemble performing folk, classical, and contemporary music of China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, or India.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students will be required to conduct research on the theoretical and conceptual framework of the repertoire, including notation in European and Asian systems. Students will perform appropriate solo repertoire in addition to the ensemble work.

Course Objectives

The successful student will be able to: - perform instrumental and choral pieces from China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia or India. - discuss the repertoire in terms of cultural and musical value.

Topics of study include: 1. Introduction to music conceptual framework 2. Overview of repertoire 3. Repertoire to be selected from: * function and ritual styles * classical traditions * contemporary pieces based in folk and classical traditions
