Course Description
An ensemble performing folk, classical, nationalistic, and contemporary music of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean region.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students will be required to conduct research on the theoretical
and conceptual frameworks of the repertoire, including music
notation in European and Near Eastern systems. Students will
perform appropriate solo repertoire in addition to ensemble work.

Course Objectives
The successful student will be able to: - perform choral, instrumental, folk, classical, and nationalistic musics from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, or the Mediterranean region. - discuss the cultural and musical value of the repertoire.
Topical Outline
Topics of study include: 1. Introduction of conceptual framework of the musics 2. Overview of repertoire 3. Repertoire to be selected from: * folk music * classical arabic, turkish, persian, or Andalusian traditions * nationalistic/folkloristic styles * contemporary and/or urban folk and classical traditions.
