Southern Garden History


Course Description

A course concentrating on historic southern garden history and historic landscapes in response to a growing interest in landscape preservation as well as an expanding emphasis on the restoration and interpretation of historic sites and gardens.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
All students are required to complete numerous seminar readings, participate in class discussions, complete a minimum of six assignments, and craft a final paper. Graduate students will be further required to lead two seminar discussions, craft a case study, and write an additional mid-term paper.

Course Objectives

Knowledge: - Appreciation of the various social, cultural, historic, and geographic factors which have influenced historic southern landscapes and gardens. - Understanding of European garden history and its influence on American and Southern gardens and landscape development. - Discussion of American botanists and naturalists, as well as early nurseries and seedsmen and their influences on American and Southern gardening. - Discussion of important historic sites, garden styles, and prominent individuals and practitioners who have played an important role in southern garden history. - Presentation of procedures and guidelines for preserving and restoring historic landscapes and gardens. - Skills and Value: Greater awareness of southern garden history and an appreciation of historic landscapes. - Ability to identify documents and interpret historic landscapes and gardens and to assist in their preservation and care.


Topical Outline

Teaching; The course will be organized around a series of readings lectures, field trips and research assignments. Readings: The course will include several selected books and a variety of readings from various periodicals, magazines and reports. Week 1 Class overview, requirements and project assignments week 2 Historic gardens/landscapes and heirloom plants research and resources week 3 Historic plants in Southern Gardens week 4 Botanists, books and Broadsides/Field trip week 5 historical,physical, and Cultural influences on southern gardens week 6 Parterres, plants, and pattern books of the antebellum south week 7 Madison, Georgia - Field Trip week 8 Vicitorian and Early Nineteeth Century Gardens/Historic trees week 9 Southern cemeteries/field tirp week 10 Historic Athens Gardens/field trip week 11 Documenting and preserving historic gardens-Methods, Policies, Practices and Strategies week 12 Preserving Historic Gardens - case studies week 13 Presentation of Research Papers week 14 Presentation of Research Papers week 15 class projects due and final exam
