Course Objectives

Students will be expected to achieve: 1. A greater understanding of the connections, complexities, and disjunctures between literary works published throughout the nineteenth century, inclusive of the Romantic and Victorian periods. 2. Command of research techniques using primary material and secondary material. 3. A more sophisticated understanding of the formal demands of a long critical essay.


Topical Outline

This course will be taught by professors with a wide variety of specialties within the field of nineteenth-century British literature, thus topics will vary from semester to semester. One course that will be offered is "Austen, the Brontes, and Virginia Woolf." This course will include: 1. A study of the primary literary works of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Anne Bronte, and Emily Bronte, with a concluding discussion of their influence upon Virginia Woolf. 2. An examination of nineteenth-century and contemporary theories of literary influence. 3. An examination of pertinent thematic, formal, and historical concerns associated with both primary and secondary source material. 4. Discussion of contemporary critical approaches to nineteenth- century British literature.
