Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will understand relevant research in the pedagogy of writing in the disciplines, introducing TAs to the theories of how best to teach students how to write across the curriculum, how best to respond to student writing, and how best to conference with students.
  • Students will have practical experience in responding to student writing and in conferencing with students.
  • Students will understand what it means to provide professional support to faculty.
  • Students will have improved and more productive personal writing processes.

Topical Outline

  • Review of the Writing in the Disciplines/Writing across the Curriculum movement: its goals and founding principles.
  • The critical thinking/student engagement/writing link.
  • How to analyze and teach the writing conventions of your discipline.
  • The writing process and how to intervene to help students.
  • How to create syllabi and assignments that support WIP principles.
  • How to teach students to revise work with an attention to global issues such as content, focus, development, and arrangement.
  • How to develop responding/grading criteria.
  • How to respond to student writing effectively.
  • How to conference with students.
  • How to teach peer review and use it effectively in your class.
  • How to work productively with WIP faculty; how to provide professional and exceptional support.
  • Writing productivity and your own writing processes.
  • How to teach students to revise for clarity, conciseness, and correctness.
