Course Objectives
Because many students hope to publish their own work in literary magazines or work as editors themselves, this course will give students the opportunity to consider the various issues of editing, as well as learn the more practical side of the process through activities that may include reading and evaluating submitted work; discussing submissions at editorial meetings; learning how to solicit authors, copy-edit, proof- read, design and lay out a magazine; and, where appropriate, learn about distribution, subscription management, marketing and promotion. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a strong theoretical and practical understanding of literary magazine or scholarly journal editing.
Topical Outline
While assignments and course structure may vary according to professor, in general students may be expected to: Read and evaluate journal submissions regularly and maintain written reports. Research and give a presentation on a literary magazine. Write a review of a recent book and submit it for publication. Perform one production-related task (for example, copy-editing, layout, mark-up, subscription management, advertising, preparing a bid, organizing a promotional event). Attend class regularly, participate actively, lead one weekly editorial meeting.
