Course Description
An overview of important patterns and issues in education relating to Hispanic/Latino students K-12 and post-secondary, statewide and nationally. Includes history, cultural context, policy issues and trends, challenges faced by Latinos in school, implications for practice, and current research.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
(1) Graduate students will read at least one additional book,
or three additional articles, dealing with Latino education,
and will present information from these readings to the class
in oral and/or written format.
(2) Graduate students will complete an additional project
entailing either an applied research project on Latino
education in Georgia, or a review of research on a topic in
Latino education.

Course Objectives
All students will: a. understand the history and current status of the education of Latino/Hispanic students nationally and in Georgia; b. comprehend how language, identity, and cultural issues for Latinos interact with schooling and education; c. understand the roles of teacher beliefs, family involvement, and program models in Latino education; d. learn about programs that are successful in supporting Latino education at all levels nationally and in Georgia. e. work with Latino students though an applied outreach project. Additionally, students enrolled for the graduate-level course will: a. investigate special topics in Latino education related to their primary field b. gain expertise in research involving Latino students
