An introductory overview of the United States public health system as it currently exists and operates, with an emphasis on the core functions of public health. A survey of different approaches to public health problems, including health promotion and disease prevention.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course students will: understand the difference between public health and medical care, become familiar with the powers and responsibilities of the government in public health, appreciate the roles and limitations of epidemiology and biostatistics, understand how psychosocial factors affect health and health behavior, appreciate the role of government in environmental health, understand why the U.S. medical system needs reform, independently plan a pilot public health intervention
