Religions of India, China, and Japan


Course Description

A broad introduction to the major religious traditions of Asia, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, the Chinese traditions of Daoism and Confucianism, and Japanese Shinto. The course will focus on central figures, core concepts, aims and beliefs, and primary religious practices within each tradition.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will identify and describe the major religious traditions of India, China, and Japan, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Confucianism, Daoism, and Shinto.
  • Students will analyze key texts, beliefs, rituals, and ethical systems within these religious traditions and their influence on cultural and social structures.
  • Students will examine the historical development of these religions and their roles in shaping political, artistic, and social movements in South and East Asia.
  • Students will discuss the role of mythology, sacred texts, and religious narratives in shaping the identities and values of followers in different historical periods.
  • Students will assess the role of religion in everyday life, including festivals, rituals, and ethical decision-making in diverse cultural contexts.
