Companion Animal Biology and Management


Course Description

Various aspects of companion animal biology. Course material will focus on nutrition, reproductive physiology, and behavior as it relates to the well-being and care of companion animals. The course emphasis will be on dogs and cats, but will also cover rodents, birds, reptiles, and amphibians as companion animals.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are to develop an understanding of: 1) the biology of various companion animals with emphasis on their nutrition, reproductive biology and behavior. 2) the physiological and metabolic basis for species differences in nutrient requirements. 3) the reproductive anatomy, cycles, and patterns as well as mating behavior, pregnancy, parturition, and neonatal care of dogs and cats. 4) the developmental behavior and species-specific behavior patterns of dogs and cats from birth to adulthood and to identify common behavior problems and their solution. 5) the management of companion animals to ensure their well-being and longevity.
