Course Description
Completion of the ILE advisement occurs with the student's academic advisor the semester prior to the APE field practicum. Students will be expected to complete an APE proposal and various professional development products, and initiate APE deliverables to be submitted in the final term of the MPH program.

Course Objectives
The student should be able to: • Identify field placement opportunities based on students' skills, qualifications, and interests. • Identify field expectations that align with MPH and concentration competencies. • Examine and detail learning outcomes mapped to appropriate competency attainment. • Examine the structure and functions of a relevant public health agency. • Examine the public health impact of the agency’s mission, vision, and values. • Articulate concepts of health and public health and convey their value and importance to clients and the public. • Develop and refine communication skills through direct participation and contact with agency staff and clients. • Utilize technology to produce professional development and field products.
Topical Outline
- Introduce the Integrative Learning Experience through mandatory briefing - Prepare and review resume, curriculum vitae, cover letter, and professional goals - Review professional portfolio with samples of presentations, papers, and technical skills - Review honors/awards, relevant coursework, projects, service, and volunteer experiences relevant to professional goals - Complete APE proposal including identification of 4-MPH and 1-concentration core competencies - Identify APE products relevant to competencies, to be documented in final MPH deliverables - Create and refine products that can be effectively utilized in the public health setting - Attend mandatory panels on internship, fellowship, and career opportunities - Participate in a mandatory workshop on a strengths-based approach to leadership - Prepare a final presentation on professional brand
