Course Objectives

This course is an introduction to the philosophical study of morality including the major philosophical positions concerning right and wrong, ethical values, and moral responsibility. The ultimate goal of the course is to help the student discover and develop his or her own reflective, moral autonomy.

Outline will include such topics as: I. Philosophical vs Scientific Study of Morality II. Ethical Relativism vs Ethical Objectivism III. Psychological & Ethical Egoism IV. Theories of Non-moral Value V. Consequentialist Theories of Moral Obligation VI. Deontological Theories of Moral Obligation VII. Virtue Based Ethical Theories VIII. Metaethical Theories of Meaning and Justification IX. Contemporary Moral Dilemmas
