Curriculum and Assessment in Physical Education


Course Description

Examination of contemporary physical education curriculum models. Students learn to develop a standards-based curriculum for a P-12 program and how to align assessments with national and state standards. Traditional and authentic assessment methods currently used in physical education are studied, including the organization, administration, and interpretation of those assessments.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete an annotated bibliography of the research on an assigned curriculum model.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to: 1. Understand purposes of education and physical education in the past, present, and future. 2. Understand foundations of curriculum and assessment. 3. Comprehend concepts of curriculum design and assessment in physical education. 4. Design curriculum and assessment plans for P-12 programs. 5. Conduct evaluation of physical education curriculum for P-12 programs. 6. Critique curriculum plans for P-12 programs. 7. Recognize student diversity and the need for multicultural education through multicultural activities in P-12 physical education. 8. Demonstrate application of diversity and multicultural education through multicultural activities. 9. Understand curricular implementation through school observations. 10. Apply appropriate state and national standards to the development of a curriculum guide.
