Course Description
Performance of African music, including styles, techniques, and movement in instrumental and vocal music. Repertoire for study and performance drawn from various regions and cultures on a rotating basis.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students will be required to conduct and report on descriptive
research on the theoretical and contextual framework of the
repertoire, including music notation in European and other
systems (written report must meet publication standards) and
improvise in selected styles of African music (improvisation
must be passed by a jury).

Course Objectives
The student will be able to: * Perform selections of indigenous, popular, and canonic African songs, dances, and/or instrumental music; * Discuss cultural history and musical elements of the required repertoire.
