This course is part of the summer in China Psychology program. The lectures will be supplemented with field trips to museums as well as to cultural locations that will help students gain a better understanding of the different approaches to abnormal psychology.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students should have learned: 1. The diagnostic system in the west (DSM) and the east (ICD). 2. The major diagnostic categories in the two systems and their primary characteristics. 3. About the major treatment approaches in the two systems used for the management of abnormal behavior across the two cultures. 4. The fundamentals of the major research approaches used in the investigation of abnormal behavior. 5. Issues in the history and understanding of abnormal behavior.
Topical Outline
The general outline of the course and topics that will be covered are presented below. There will be, however, variation in the topics covered due to changes in the field as well the focus of the course in any given year as well as different texts and supplemental materials. Some topics below may be deleted and others added. The exact order of topics will vary. 1. Historical perspective and definitions of mental illness in the two cultures. 2. Western orientations to mental health. 3. Eastern orientations to mental health. 4. Research methods. 5. Classification DSM vs. ICD. 6. Anxiety disorders. 7. Affective disorders. 8. Eating disorders. 9. Substance abuse. 10. Schizophrenia.
