Foundations of Teaching Physical Education


Course Description

Examines historical, philosophical, sociological, pedagogical, and content knowledge factors which influence the nature, evolution, and maintenance of physical education and sport in the schools through current theory and research findings.

Course Objectives

The student will: 1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the history of physical education and influential leaders along with present-day issues. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of factors and issues related to quality physical education (e.g., public relations, promotion, image, teacher–coach role conflict). 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of a physical education teacher. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of basic principles pertaining to the understanding and application of the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains of learning. 5. Develop a personal teaching philosophy. 6. Demonstrate a basic understanding of liability concepts and issues as they relate to creating and maintaining a safe teaching and learning environment. 7. Demonstrate basic lesson planning and delivery for various teaching opportunities. 8. Demonstrate use of instructional teaching cues. 9. Demonstrate basic concepts and strategies to improve student time-on-task and factors affecting learning. 10. Demonstrate knowledge of various types of feedback and describe how they affect the teaching and learning environment. 11. Demonstrate knowledge of reflective practice as it relates to effective instruction.
