Course Description
Students will be matched with an organization in Siena, Italy, where they will become acquainted with the approach the Italians take to social problems while also improving their language skills.

Non-Traditional Format
Students will earn one to three hour(s) of credit while perfecting their Italian language skills. Students enroll in the credit hours they need (one, two, or three). In order to earn one credit, they are required to complete weekly written reflective assignments in addition to the final project. In order to earn two credits, they are required to complete bi- weekly written reflective assignments in addition to the final project. In order to earn three credits, they are required to complete tri-weekly written reflective assignments, in addition to the final project. Only three hours of credit taken during the same semester will count for the Romance Languages minor or major (the course can only be counted toward the major or minor if the three hours are all taken at once during the same semester). Reflective writing assignments and course readings will be supervised by a faculty member. The completion of a final project is necessary for successful completion of the course.

Course Objectives
Students will serve and become involved in the community in which they will be placed. While gaining knowledge about the community and Italian culture at large, they will expand their knowledge of Italian grammar, vocabulary, and usage. Students will also gain insights into how the Italians approach various social problems and educational systems.
Topical Outline
Students will serve at an Italian institution in order to learn about how the community approaches education and/or social problems. Students will be supervised by an on-site coordinator as well as by a faculty member who will review written reflection assignments as well as a final project.
