Physical Education in the Elementary School


Course Description

Instructional methods and content for teaching physical activities in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. Students will plan lessons and teach groups of students in elementary school physical education classes.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are required to develop an appropriate curriculum based upon progression of skills and motor development patterns.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, pre-service teachers should be able to: 1. Articulate the value and purpose of physical education for children. 2. Define developmentally appropriate elementary physical education content for children. 3. Identify and analyze the goals and outcomes of elementary school physical education. 4. Identify and explain the Skill Theme approach to teaching elementary physical education and utilize these concepts to construct challenging progressions for a variety of learner capabilities. 5. Identify fundamental principles and safety concerns for effectively teaching elementary physical education. 6. Develop a repertoire of strategies, progressions and diverse themes for effectively teaching elementary physical education. 7. Plan, assist, and teach elementary physical education learning experiences to elementary school students. 8. Develop and implement practical assessments during practice and design appropriate learning experiences to challenge individual learners of varying abilities. 9. Articulate the benefits of elementary physical education for motor development in children and the benefits therein. 10.Demonstrate mastery in content knowledge and performance in fundamental locomotor, manipulative, and non-manipulative skills that comprise elementary physical education content. 11.Utilize technology as a way to enhance the teaching and learning process in physical education.
