Course Objectives

Upon Successful completion of this course, students should: 1. Have a general knowledge of horses and behavior 2. Demonstrate safety both unmounted and mounted 3. Explain and demonstrate the proper techniques of handling 4. Explain and demonstrate the basics of proper equitation 5. Be able to ride unassisted at the walk, jog and lope


Topical Outline

The practical will consist of a series of hands-on demonstrations. Topics include, but are not limited to, demonstrations of proper grooming techniques, tacking up, and riding skills. Tentative sequence of events: Parts of the horse Functions of parts Safety around horses and basic horse handling Catching/haltering Leading with halter Tying the horse and proper knots Restraints Grooming Equipment and uses Hoof care Showmanship at halter Tack and saddling the horse Parts of saddle and bridle Proper and safe saddling and bridling habits Adjustment of tack to fit horse and rider Care of riding equipment Action of the bit in the mouth Indirect and direct rein Types of equipment Longeing Mounting and dismounting Riding position Stopping the horse Backing the horse Jogging the horse Position and balance exercises Lunge line exercies The Aids Walking round, controlled circles Trotting round, controlled circles Figure eights Loping the horse
