Physical Education for the Middle/Secondary School
Course Description
Curriculum, methods, and evaluation strategies for teaching
physical education in grades 6-12. Students will plan units,
lessons, and teach groups of diverse students in both middle and
high school physical education classes.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students: Graduate students will develop a curriculum based upon skill progression and motor development of this age group.

Students will plan a series of related lessons for middle and high school students
a. Align well-written objectives for a sport/dance activity, movement concepts, and affective learning that are aligned with Georgia state and national standards, and a valid, reliable assessment strategy. (SHAPE Initial PETE Standard 3.a, Georgia TAPS Standards 1 & 2 )
b. Design experiences for middle and high school learners for the development of specialized sport, dance, and/or gymnastics skills, sports strategies, techniques, and rules, health-related fitness, and affective growth. (SHAPE Initial PETE Standard 1.b, Georgia TAPS Standard 1)
c. Design experiences appropriate for varying levels of ability, rate of learning, and style of learning. (SHAPE Initial PETE Standard 3.b, Georgia TAPS Standard 2)
d. Demonstrate the ability to plan for motivation and accountability strategies to facilitate learning. (SHAPE Initial PETE Standard 4.a, Georgia TAPS Standard 2)

Students will teach developmentally appropriate lessons to middle and/or high school students.
a. Present lessons with (a) clarity, (b) appropriate, accurate cues, (c) logical progression through parts of a lesson, (d) efficiency in transitions from one learning task to another, (e) maximal practice opportunities for all learners, (f) management and practice prompts, and (g) appropriate communication. b. Provide accurate and appropriate feedback to learners. (SHAPE Initial PETE Standard 4.e, Georgia TAPS Standard 3)

Students will accurately reflect using in-depth thinking on planning, teaching, and assessment of performance from a live lesson.
