Course Description
The nature, behavioral and physical characteristics, and motor limitations of various populations with disabilities. Methods of preparing meaningful individualized movement experiences in an integrated, segregated, or clinical setting. Includes developing lessons and teaching individuals in a clinical setting.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate Students will participate in and complete the following
assignments:
1. Clinical experience in physical and motor development
clinic;
2. Abstract 10 research articles on adapted physical activity;
3. Course paper/project;
4. Practicum in school district adapted physical education
programs.

Course Objectives
Students will be able to: 1. Identify and discuss current state and national issues, problems, and legislation related to the education of individuals with disabilities. 2. Identify and demonstrate the use of appropriate tools for the evaluation of motor development, physical fitness, and perceptual motor performance. 3. Discuss the causes, characteristics, etiology and implications of learning disabilities, sensory defects, physical disabilities and conditions affecting individuals in integrated, special school or inclusion settings. 4. Plan and implement appropriate teaching methodology based on assessment and knowledge of various disabilities, and awareness of development of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), Task Analysis and Behavioral Intervention Techniques to enhance learning and program effectiveness. 5. Discuss the role of the community agencies and related services which are appropriate in the education of children with disabilities. 6. Work with parents on the development of the IEP, homebound instruction, and appropriate home learning materials.
