Student Learning Outcomes
Students’ oral and written skills in French will be improved through a series of various types of activities, that encourage and help them to effectively express their ideas.
Students will consult a variety of cultural products, such as periodical press articles, chronicles, interviews, films, level-appropriate novels, music, and social media to develop awareness, appreciation and knowledge of the topic that is the theme for the course.
Students will recognize the impact of human behaviors on the environment, on other human beings, and ultimately on history through a series of articles, interviews, films, music, and social media.
Topical Outline
The topics covered will vary according to the instructor. Among the possible topics are:
1. Overview of French history: prehistory, the Roman and Gallo-Roman periods, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Classical and Enlightenment periods, the 19th and 20th centuries, including highlights of the major events and cultural developments of each period.
2. The political and social structure of modern France.
3. The mentality of contemporary French society.
4. France's contribution to modern artistic and cultural movements.
5. France and the world: Francophonie, Europe, the U.S.
