Course Description

Policy analysis and systems performance in the U.S. Understanding of theoretical and practical bases for developing and analyzing policies to improve health using Social Determinants of Health framework. Overview of metrics used by decision makers. Concepts of accessibility, equity, efficiency, quality measuring, and influence to enhance system performance.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will understand how to evaluate the policy process and fundamental tools of policy analysis (both ex ante and ex post).
  • Students will understand how to conduct health policy analysis using a number of quantitative and qualitative approaches.
  • Students will understand how to analyze health policy topics and healthcare systems through the following mechanisms: accessibility, equity, economic efficiency, and quality.
  • Students will understand how to lead and facilitate discussion on the legal and ethical forces that shape healthcare systems and health policy, writ large.
  • Students will understand how to identify strategies to evaluate large scale improvement of healthcare systems and understand the application of such strategies in local contexts.
  • Students will understand how to investigate the evidence base on innovations in measuring quality in healthcare systems.
