Political, social, and cultural factors which have influenced the participation of women in sport and physical activity.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students must take one of the political, social, or cultural factors and research the topic for a paper.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will understand current scholarship and debates surrounding issues of gender in sport and particularly women's participation in sport.
  • Students will understand how to use a critical perspective to examine sport as a significant social institution and its relationship to the cultural construction and interpretation of gender.
  • Students will understand how to develop and foster critical thinking skills, to learn and understand the historical and social context underlying the current state of women's participation in sport, and to become savvy media critics.
