Course Description

Full-time teaching practice in schools under an experienced mentor teacher.

Non-Traditional Format

Student is assigned to a supervising teacher in a public school for 15 weeks. The student prepares units, teaches lessons, and evaluates the learning of the students in the classes. The student is observed by the supervising teacher daily and a faculty member periodically to evaluate the student's performance as a teacher.

Course Objectives

The students will: A. Develop an awareness of the personal and physical requirements of teaching. B. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of learners' characteristics (e.g., emotional, physical, mental, cultural and ethnic), their needs, abilities and interests. C. Demonstrate an ability to engage in self-evaluation in assessing strengths as well as areas of need. D. Perform a reexamination of their own goals and values in view of the complex demands of teaching. E. Demonstrate knowledge of the relationship of health and physical education to general education, and to realize the contribution of health and physical education to the total development of the learner. F. Observe experienced teachers in the field of physical education. G. Engage in actual teaching experiences which will enhance the development and improvement of all aspects and facets of the teaching-learning experience. H. Carry out the functions of a professional educator, including competencies in curriculum planning, daily routine evaluation of students, class control and management, rapport development, and use of audio-visual materials. I. Analyze and assess characteristics of teachers (e.g., perception of self and others, classroom behaviors, attitudes about children/teenagers and teaching, knowledge and skills), which are deemed prerequisite for becoming a successful teacher. J. Demonstrate the knowledge, behaviors, and dispositions required by and learned in the Health and Physical Education Teacher Education program.


Topical Outline

I. Observing procedures and teaching of supervising teacher. II. Assisting with routine duties. a. check roll - record absences and dress b. issue equipment c. prepare gymnasium or field for activity d. issue towels, gym suits, or equipment e. supervise dressing room f. bus duty, hall duty, homeroom, etc. III. Acclimating to school and supervising teacher's schedule. IV. Learning policies pertaining to students and teachers. V. Determining with supervising teacher the units you will teach and the dates. VI. Working with individual students on skill development. VII. Working with small groups on skill development. VIII. Observing classrooms other than the physical education one. IX. Teaching at least 25% of class periods using cooperating teacher's lesson plans. X. Designing unit plans. XI. Teaching at least 50% of class period using cooperating teacher's lesson plans. XII. Preparing lesson plans, for each class taught. XIII. Assuming at least 75% of teaching classes with your unit/lesson plans. XIV. Assuming all teaching classes with your unit/lesson plans.
