An overview of the United States Public Health System as it currently exists and operates, with an emphasis on the core functions of public health. A survey of different approaches to public health problems, including health promotion and disease prevention.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will: -understand the difference between public health and medical care; -become familiar with the powers and responsibilities of the government in public health; -appreciate the roles and limitations of epidemiology and biostatistics; -understand how psychosocial factors affect health and health behavior; -appreciate the role of government in environmental health; -understand why the U.S. health care system needs reform; -independently pilot a public health intervention
