Course Objectives
This honors seminar course provides students with a broad and balanced perspective of microbiology research at UGA. Students should become acquainted with the major groups of microorganisms studied at UGA and the techniques employed in these research efforts. Students should become acquainted with the sources and uses of microbes in industrial and biotechnological applications. Finally, students should gain the concept of symbiosis, the mechanisms by which infectious agents subvert and exploit the host, and immune defenses against infection. Information will be conveyed to the students by class lectures and readings. Students will be evaluated on the basis of six, two page writing assignments and class participation.
